Tomogashima

An uninhabited island of overgrown Meiji-era gun batteries. Three hours on foot, ferry only.

A group of uninhabited islands off Kata, 20 minutes by ferry. The main island, Okinoshima, is covered in abandoned Meiji-era coastal fortifications — brick tunnels, magazines and gun emplacements, mostly swallowed by forest. Circling the island on foot takes about three hours. It is the model for Hitogashima in the series, and free pilgrimage maps are distributed at the ferry terminal and tourist office.

Pourquoi ça vaut le détour

There is nothing else like it near a major city — a genuine abandoned fortress you walk through, 90 minutes from Osaka.

Quand y aller

Busy on fine weekends; the ferry has limited capacity.

Bon à savoir

Check the ferry timetable and the last return sailing before you go — there is nothing on the island and no way off it outside sailings. Sailings are reduced on weekdays and cancelled in rough weather. Bring water, food, a torch for the tunnels and shoes you can walk three hours in.
