Sensoji Temple & Nakamise

The Taisho-era Asakusa referenced in Demon Slayer, and Tokyo's oldest temple.

Sensoji is Tokyo's oldest temple, founded in 645, and the Nakamise shopping street leading to it has operated for centuries. The district is the one most clearly evoked in the Asakusa sequences of Demon Slayer, and walking it at night, when the lanterns are lit and the crowds thin out, is by far the closest match to the anime.

Pourquoi ça vaut le détour

It is free, open at night, and one train stop from Tokyo Skytree where the official merchandise is sold.

Seulement ici

Nakamise street food, temple stamp books, and traditional crafts.

Quand y aller

Extremely crowded 10:00–16:00. After 19:00 the shops close but the illuminated grounds are quiet and photogenic.

Bon à savoir

Go at night for the anime atmosphere, or before 08:00 for empty daytime photos.

Demon Slayer

The Asakusa night scenes, including the encounter on the main approach, are set in this district. Nakamise and the temple approach keep the same layout.

Questions fréquentes

What is the best time to visit Asakusa for Demon Slayer atmosphere?

After 19:00. The Nakamise shops close, the tour groups leave, and the illuminated temple grounds stay open and quiet — that combination is the closest the city gets to the anime. For empty daytime photographs, arrive before 08:00 instead. Between 10:00 and 16:00 the district is packed.
