Kitaro Chaya, Jindaiji

A yokai-themed tea house by Jindaiji temple in western Tokyo, where Shigeru Mizuki lived for most of his life.

A tea house in a converted old building beside Jindaiji, one of the oldest temples in Tokyo, serving yokai-themed sweets and drinks with a small gallery and shop. Shigeru Mizuki lived in Chofu from 1959 until his death, and the area appears in his work.

Pourquoi ça vaut le détour

It is the Tokyo option if you cannot get to Tottori, and Jindaiji itself — soba restaurants, woodland, a botanical garden next door — is one of the better half-days in western Tokyo.

Quand y aller

Busy at weekends.

Bon à savoir

Closed Mondays. Eat the soba — Jindaiji soba is the reason locals come here, quite apart from the tea house.

Kitaro le repoussant

The Tokyo option, by Jindaiji temple in Chofu, where he lived.
