Takehara preservation district
The white-walled merchant quarter the series is set in. Two official pilgrimage routes, bicycles available.
A nationally designated preservation district of Edo-period merchant houses — white plaster walls, wooden lattice windows, stone-paved lanes and temple steps rising behind. Takehara grew rich on salt and sake, and several of the houses and breweries are open. The series is about a girl photographing this town.
Pourquoi ça vaut le détour
The town is worth the trip on its own, and the series is about looking at it carefully, which is a useful instruction.
Quand y aller
Quiet on weekdays.
Bon à savoir
The city publishes two official pilgrimage routes and rents bicycles near the tourist office. Takehara is about 90 minutes from Hiroshima on the Kure line, which is a scenic coastal ride in itself.
