Lieu de l'œuvre
The Old Chichibu Bridge
The bridge from the opening sequence. A closed-off older bridge kept for pedestrians, above the Ara River.
A three-arch reinforced concrete bridge, now closed to traffic and preserved for pedestrians beside its modern replacement. It appears in the opening and recurs throughout the series, and it is a registered tangible cultural property in its own right.
Pourquoi ça vaut le détour
It is genuinely handsome, empty most of the time, and open at any hour. The valley below it is the reason the town looks the way it does in the series.
Quand y aller
Rarely crowded.
Bon à savoir
Pick up the free pilgrimage map at the tourist information centre in front of Seibu-Chichibu Station before setting out. The bridge is a 25-minute walk from the stations — pleasant in spring and autumn, hard work in August.
