The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Nishinomiya, and the school that is being renamed out of existence.

Haruhi is set in **Nishinomiya**, between Osaka and Kobe, where the author grew up. The model for the school is **Hyogo Prefectural Nishinomiya-Kita High School** on the hill above Koyoen station, and the long climb to it — universally called Haruhi Slope — is the walk that opens the series. Two honest notes. The school is being consolidated and renamed, so the name on the gate is going; and it is a working school, which means you look from the public road and nothing else. Along with Lucky Star, this is one of the works that built the practice of anime pilgrimage in the 2000s, and Nishinomiya has stayed friendly to it.

Questions fréquentes

Where is Haruhi set?

Nishinomiya in Hyogo, between Osaka and Kobe, where the author grew up. The climb from Koyoen station to the school is the walk that opens the series.

Can I go into the school?

No. It is a working school. Photograph from the public road only. It is also being consolidated and renamed, so the name on the gate will not be there indefinitely.

Are there rules on Haruhi Slope?

Pupils from several schools use the road. Do not block it, do not photograph pupils, and do not smoke — it is prohibited around schools under the Hyogo ordinance.
