Karatsu Castle
The castle on the water that defines the skyline of Hasetsu. Visible from most of the town.
A reconstructed keep on a promontory between the sea and the river mouth, reached by a long stone stairway or a lift. It is the landmark that makes Karatsu recognisable as Hasetsu, and it appears repeatedly in the series.
Why it is worth it
The view from the top takes in the pine grove of Niji-no-Matsubara and the bay, which is the landscape the series draws.
When to go
Busy in cherry blossom and wisteria season.
Good to know
The lift saves the stairway if you are short on time. Pick up the official pilgrimage map at the tourist office in Karatsu Station first — it maps the rest of the locations from here.
