Anime location
Hie Shrine, Takayama
The model for the shrine in the opening and the New Year episode, on the wooded hill south of the old town.
A shrine on the hillside south of the old town, approached through tall cedars, and the seat of the spring half of the Takayama Festival — one of the largest float festivals in Japan. It is the model for the shrine in Hyouka, and the approach and the grounds appear as drawn.
Why it is worth it
It is a twenty-minute walk from the station through the old town, so the pilgrimage and the sightseeing are the same walk.
When to go
Quiet except at festival time.
Good to know
The spring Takayama Festival (mid-April) is centred here and is worth planning around, but the town is extremely full during it — book accommodation months ahead or visit on any other day.
