Hyouka

Takayama, drawn building by building, in a town people already travel to.

Hyouka is set in **Takayama**, the old merchant town in the Gifu mountains, and Kyoto Animation drew it with the accuracy that studio is known for. **Hie Shrine** is the model for the shrine in the opening and the New Year episode; **Kanshokan**, the French-style wooden library building, appears in the research episode; and the preserved streets of the old town run through the series. The advantage over most pilgrimages is that Takayama is already one of the most rewarding towns in Japan to visit — the morning markets, the sake breweries and the festival floats stand on their own.

Common questions

Where is Hyouka set?

Takayama, the old merchant town in the Gifu mountains. Hie Shrine and the Kanshokan library building are the main locations.

Is Takayama worth visiting anyway?

Yes. The morning markets, the preserved streets, the sake breweries and the festival floats stand on their own. This is one of the easiest pilgrimages to bring non-fans on.

When is the Takayama Festival?

Mid-April for the spring festival, centred on Hie Shrine. The town is extremely full during it — book accommodation months ahead or visit on another day.
