The Ten Straw Hat Statues, in Two Days
Two in the city, then a loop through the Aso caldera towns the earthquakes hit hardest.
The ten statues were placed across Kumamoto after the 2016 earthquakes, deliberately sited in the worst-hit towns to bring visitors to them. Day one covers the city — Luffy on the prefectural government promenade and Chopper at the zoo — then heads east to Ozu. Day two runs the caldera loop through Nishihara, Minamiaso, Aso and Takamori. This needs a car: bus services between the Aso towns are limited, and the point of the project is to spend money in those towns, so stop and eat in them.
