A small hot spring village in a valley behind Kanazawa, with a handful of ryokan around a pond and a public bathhouse. The inn in the series is set here, and the village has kept the connection going for well over a decade without turning itself into a theme park.
Why it is worth it
Kanazawa is one of the best cities in Japan and this is 50 minutes from it — the combination works whether or not you know the series.
When to go
Quiet outside the festival.
Good to know
Staying overnight at one of the ryokan is the way to do it. Kanazawa itself — Kenrokuen, the geisha districts, the 21st Century Museum — is the other half of the trip.
