Monkey Punch Collection, Hamanaka
The author's studio recreated inside the town cultural centre, with a real Fiat 500 beside it. Free.
A permanent exhibition in Hamanaka's cultural centre recreating Monkey Punch's studio, named AGITO — his pens, paints, paint-stained desk, the magazines he was published in, and the tablet he was drawing on decades before most manga artists went digital. A real Fiat 500, the car Lupin drives, is displayed alongside. It reopened in July 2024 after the building was refurbished.
Why it is worth it
It is free, it is the only place dedicated to Lupin anywhere, and the tablet in the studio quietly tells you something about the man that nothing else does.
When to go
Almost always empty.
Good to know
This is genuinely remote — eastern Hokkaido, a long way from Sapporo, and public transport is thin. Combine it with Kiritappu marsh and cape, and with Kushiro and Akkeshi, as a multi-day eastern Hokkaido trip rather than a detour. Lupin-liveried trains and taxis run in the area.
