The series is set on **Shodoshima**, an island in the Seto Inland Sea in Kagawa, and almost everything is in **Tonosho** at the western end. **Angel Road**, the sandbar that appears out of the sea twice a day at low tide, is in the opening and on the film's key visual. The school, the bookshop and the 415-step stone stairway at Kose are all real and all findable. The town publishes a location map, distributed free at Tonosho port, which makes this one of the easier island pilgrimages to do properly.
