SLAM DUNK

One railway crossing in Kamakura, and fans queue to photograph it every day.

SLAM DUNK is the reason a small railway crossing in Kamakura receives visitors from across Asia every single day. The Enoden line runs beside the sea at Kamakurakokomae, and the crossing framed against the water is the anime opening almost exactly. It is free, outdoors, and open at all hours — but it is also a working level crossing on a residential street, and the city has had to post multilingual notices asking visitors not to block the road. Go early, stand back, and it is one of the most rewarding stops in Japan.

Common questions

Where is the level crossing from the opening?

Kamakurakokomae station on the Enoden line, about an hour from Shinjuku. The crossing is directly outside the station with the sea behind it.

Is it crowded, and are there rules?

Very. It is a working level crossing on a public road with heavy visitor numbers, and local signage asks people not to block the road or the pavement. Do not stand on the tracks.

What else is nearby?

Enoshima is two stops west and Kamakura is a few stops east. Riding the whole Enoden line end to end takes about 35 minutes and is worth doing in itself.
