Chibi Maruko-chan is a huge deal across East and Southeast Asia and almost unknown to Western fans. It is set in **Shimizu**, now part of Shizuoka city, in the 1970s, and the author drew her own childhood there. **Chibi Maruko-chan Land**, inside the Dream Plaza complex on Shimizu port, recreates the house, the classroom and the shopping street of the period at full size. It is open every day of the year, 1,200 yen, and Shimizu is 15 minutes from Shizuoka station — which is itself an hour from Tokyo on the Shinkansen.
